Blog #574: I’m on a Safari

In southern California near my home…
LOTS of people walk their dogs.

I’m lucky…
and meet many of them.

Some get to know me and sign up for this blog.

One day I was walking with one of them.

She asked: “What if you couldn’t find a story to write about?”
I answered: “There’s always a story to be found.”
She answered: “I’ve thought about what I’d write…and I can’t find much.”

The challenge was on.

I said: “Well…look around. What do you see…what do you feel…what do you think?”

She listed more of what her eyes saw.
Less of what she thought or felt seeing them.

She added: “I couldn’t write about this. It wouldn’t be interesting.”

We walked in quiet for 30 yards.

I said: “Look at the hummingbird!”…and pointed. “He just keeps hovering in the air. Do you think he’s thinking about where he’s flying next?”

We watched until the hummingbird went left so fast we lost sight of him.

I said: “There’s a story.”
She said: “How?”

I said:

“What made the hummingbird go left? Did he sense something scary to the right? Did he remember an awesome flower bush on the left to return to? Did he even think about where he’d end up when he started flying again?

I caught her interest.

I continued.

“And that stimulates even bigger reflection. In OUR crossroad decisions…why do we choose what we choose? How do we decide left…or right?

Me some more…

“Do we turn left because of the fear we imagine is on the right…or do we go right because of the adventure we think lives in that direction?”

And from there…

A conversation exploration began.

And together…

We found a story.

“What adventure am I going to live today?!”

I wonder that thought every morning.

If adventure is planted in my head…adventure is found in my steps.

New sights.

New conversations.

New moments.

They’re available for us to find every single day we’re breathing.

Life breathes adventure when life is lived as a safari.

So today…

I write.

I read.

I see.

I hear.

I share.

I listen.

I think.

I feel.

I learn.

Because when you’re on a safari…

You find them all.
