Blog #763: He Kept It Real

Sep 24, 2026Blog Post

Last week…
One email hit me with three uncomfortable words:

“I’m not impressed.”

So I wrote about it.

______

And then the emails started coming.

Tens of them.

100% gracious.

Positive.
Kind.
Heartfelt.

Like this one…

“You don’t know me, but I feel I know you. I’m totally into your Thursdays. After the guy told you, ‘I’m not impressed,’ I need to write and let you know ‘I am impressed.’ I am sure there are lots of people more like me than that guy. You keep it real for real people like me. You don’t pretend you know it all, and when you’re 53, divorced, fat, with a shitty 401K, real is what I need to hear. I still have hope I can turn things around. Maybe sending this email will be the start of that. Thank you, Shawn.”

______

What I saw…

Buried in that gutsy email was this line:

“Maybe sending this email will be the start of that.”

Maybe.

That’s the little opening he gave himself.

He didn’t promise to change his life.
He didn’t tell me he had a plan.
He just sent a kind email.

That’s it.

But maybe…

That’s how change starts.

We do something that seems small.

Like…

Going on a walk.

Making a call.

Acting on an idea.

Or maybe…

Sending an email to a guy who writes a blog.

Nothing huge.

Just enough to whisper to “MAYBE”…

“I believe in you.”

______

After all that each of us has celebrated and suffered…

No matter how old we are.

No matter who we’re with—or not with.

No matter what’s in our bank account.

No matter how fast or slow we walk.

None of us are done if there’s still a maybe left in us.

Sometimes…

All we need is a little maybe to give our hope electricity.

______

When we believe in maybe…

We stop closing the door on ourselves.

And maybe that’s enough.

Enough to get out of bed.

To move one tired foot forward anyway.

To stop waiting for the fear to leave.

To put some effort into living again.

Doing one small thing gives hope oxygen.

______

Better is possible.

If we never lose our maybe.

He’s not lost his.

I’m not losing mine.

Don’t lose yours…either.

EXTRA Thoughts…

“MAYBE…I can do it.”

Those words have walked my dirty sneakers around the world.

✨

Last week…

Three little words bit me like a mosquito.

They got to me at first, and then…

Curious?

Here’s the blog:

I Got Mosquitoed

✨

This week…

Maybe you will.

Maybe you won’t.

Give your maybe a chance.

Again.

Thank you for showing up today.

I’ll see you next week.

With appreciation and gratitude…
