Blog #570: Red Shoe. Green Shoe.

Green shoe.

That’s what the guy in the elevator was wearing.

Before I begin…

Let me freely admit I’m not the guy reading the “Be the Cool Kid on the Block!” fashion articles. I had zero idea this expensive, neon red shoe/green shoe thing was the cool new “IN” thing.

I know differently now.

After doing some Googling, I’m “in the know.”

Back to the elevator story we go…

I said: “Wow! A red shoe…and a green shoe! THAT’s a statement! What did you decide to do today…wear one of each?”

He said: “Nah. My girlfriend wanted me to get these… so I did.”

A quick product lesson ensued.

I asked: “Out of curiosity…what do you feel wearing one red shoe and one green shoe?”

He answered: “I first felt conscientious and was getting too much attention. Now I feel like I’m someone to be seen.”

The elevator door opened and he left.

“Someone to be seen.”

Ohhh…such a juicy comment.

But it IS our culture to be seen…isn’t it?

“See me!”

Wear a red shoe and a green shoe.

“See me!”

Post how awesome our lives are on social media.

“See me!”

Change our “look” by going to the doctor.

“See me!”

“See me!”

“See me!”

But I’m thinkin’…

If the world is so extra focused on “See me!”…

are they even really lookin’ at you and me?

Probably not.

As for me…

I definitely won’t be going the red shoe/green shoe route. I’ll continue to keep wearing these black, dirty old sneakers around until they have zero tread left on them.

Because I love them.

As Popeye, a favorite childhood mentor, often said:

“I yam what I yam and that’s all what I yam.”

As an ode to Popeye and in Dr. Seuss style, I end with…

My shoes might not be the coolest…nor my car the newest.

My phone might be old…and my frown lines quite bold.

But…

If I ‘see me’…and I like the me who I see…

The me who I see is quite sufficient for me.
