Blog #742: What’s Heavier Than Luggage?

Apr 30, 2026Blog Post

Some emails carry more than words.
They carry crossroads.

This one asked me:

“Should I move to Spain for 60 days…
and change everything?”

______

The email:

“My partner wants to move to Spain. As a trial, he wants us to take LOA’s from our jobs and move for 60 days as an experiment.

I’m scared to death. I know by asking you, I’m asking the wrong person to hear no. But what do you think, Shawn? Is this a good idea?”

______

What do I think?

I think comfort has quietly drowned more lives than failure ever has.

So if you’re asking me whether you should stay safely planted in the familiar…or take a bold step into something uncertain and alive…

You know my bias.

______

Your partner is nudging you to take 60 days.

He wants to:

Step away from routine.
Pack the bags.
Test a new life in Spain.

So what’s my answer?

Get on the plane.

______

Sixty days is not forever.

It’s not a life sentence.
It’s a test.
One chapter—not the whole book.
It’s not burning the bridge.

The only way to know if a road is right…

Is to drive it.

______

I walk outside the lines more than most.

I’d rather collect stories than excuses.
I’d rather come home wiser than stay home comfortable.
I’d rather fail chasing life than succeed avoiding it.

I choose not to let dreams and goals die in my head.

______

I’ve learned:

The dangerous question is this:

“What if this goes wrong?”

The better question is:

“What if this changes my life?”

______

I’m not saying to ignore wisdom.

Talk honestly.
Plan wisely.
Protect what matters.

Courage and common sense should travel together.

But don’t let fear be the one making this decision.

I’ve let fear talk me into staying small.

And every single time…

Regret was louder than fear ever was.

Fear is perfectly comfortable with a small life.

I’m not.

______

I’ve walked across nine countries.

Visited 80+ countries.

Crossed America by bicycle—twice.

Slept on the ocean for more than 400 nights.

And chased enough wild goals to make people ask:

“What’s wrong with you?”

What many people miss is this:

Some of life’s best experiences begin scared to death.

______

Go to Spain.

Grow.

Live the adventure.

Let transformation find you.

Sometimes the biggest risk in life isn’t leaving.

It’s staying.

Staying where you’ve outgrown.

Staying where fear feels safer than possibility.

Staying where comfort slowly becomes regret.

______

I’ve learned:

Regret is heavier than luggage.

So pack the bags.

Board the plane.

Trust the unknown.

Because you were never built for a small life.

You were built for wonder.

For courage.

For stories worth telling.

Sometimes…

Going the extra mile means leaving the life that no longer fits.

EXTRA Thoughts

Regret is heavier than luggage.

One gets unpacked after the flight.

The other never got on the plane…
And asks, “What if?” forever.

Missed last week’s blog?

When I consistently fail in going after a goal…
my brain knows why.

There are three reasons.

Curious?

Here’s the link to the blog:

If Your Goals Keep Dying

This week…

May you live life as an inspiring adventure.

I’ll see you next Thursday.

With appreciation and gratitude…
