#498: One Purple Toenail Later
It was only 60 days ago
that I decided to DO it.
Now it’s over.
Calendars and clocks move unbelievably fast.
On June 29, I made the decision to walk across Spain.
On June 30, I booked a non-refundable ticket to Oviedo.
On July 1-5, I mapped out a walking route and booked rooms to sleep.
On July 26, I started walking 200+ ridiculous miles.
And now…one purple-toenail later… I did it.
Three cold, hard truths about calendars and clocks:
1. They’re indifferent to our goals and timelines.
2. They’re unrelenting in their mission to keep turning and ticking.
3. They have 0% interest in waiting for us to get off our ass.
For lunch today I was looking at the packaged salads in my frig for expiration dates. I wish we knew ours. Unfortunately, we are not privy to reading a label on the back of our shirts to see when our “expiration” date is. I think if we did, it would add a jolt of urgency to our actions and get us off the evening couch.
But we don’t know our future.
Nor when it ends.
And because I don’t know, I’m extra conscious of not putting off what I want to live until 1,000 tomorrows from now.
The future is never where life is lived.
Last week, a friend in fire-ridden Northern California shared: “We took the garbage cans out earlier in the day. At 11:30 p.m., we were being evacuated.”
Life can change in an instant.
And because I know this, I’m not betting on the fact I get 10,000, 1,000 or even 100 more tomorrows. My next biggie? It’s already being planned.
Calendars and clocks.
I trust neither to be my friend.
Live your “List.”
Now.

Neither is My Friend
