Blog #760: I Knew That Look

Sep 3, 2026Blog Post

This last Sunday…

The weather cooled.

A bit.

But I’ll take 77 degrees
to “get my walk on” any day.

______

With weather on my side…

I willed my sneakers to move as hard as they could go.

152 long minutes.

No rest timeouts.

20 heavy pounds on my back.

The steep climbs.

Me dripping wet.

Probably 7.5 miles.

Phew!

My body gave its best.

So did my heart.

______

I saw a bunch of people on the trail giving it their best.

Like me…

Their faces read something I was feeling, too.

“This is freakin’ hard! But I’m doing it!”

EVERY time one passed me coming my direction…

I gave a thumbs up.

And I shouted out, “Good Job!”

Most of the time…

I got a “You, too!” back.

Predictably…

My own words started lifting me.

Their “Good Job!” became mine, too.

______

As I walked…

Energized by the exchange and feeling my body’s struggle less…

I started thinking.

“The ‘Good Job!’ Club.”

I’m a member.

The fellow trail people were, too.

If you were out there with us, I think you would be, too.

______

Here’s a thought.

What if we carried that simple, yet powerful, trail exchange with us?

Into our homes.

Into our workplaces.

Into our friendships.

Even toward strangers.

When we see someone really, REALLY trying…

Let’s let them know.

That’s what members of the “Good Job!” Club do.

______

And when you’re a club member…

Here is an ironic double secret.

The more power, inspiration, and energy we give away…

the more we somehow add to our own.

It’s automatic.

Give it.

Receive it.

It might not come from them…

But we feel it from ourselves.

It’s one of those mysterious secrets of the Universe.

Pour positive juice into another’s glass…and we keep ours filled.

______

It’s always a choice.

One of the two.

Be…

Someone’s uphill.

Someone’s mountain.

Someone’s rough ocean.

Or be…

Someone’s “Good Job!”

Someone’s “I see you.”

Someone’s “Keep going!”

Everybody is pushing a wheelbarrow through life.

Some are loaded with extra bricks making the push feel almost impossible.

And sometimes…

IMPOSSIBLE.

______

People get beat up.

They get scared.

They get overwhelmed.

Sometimes they quietly wonder if anyone even notices what they’re pushing.

They wonder how they can keep up with life’s demands.

They wonder if anybody would even notice if they stopped.

They start thinking everything is a lot of bullshit.

Sometimes the wheelbarrow gets too heavy.

And their life tips over.

______

And that’s where you come in.

That’s where I come in.

That’s where members of the “Good Job!” Club come in.

Ever wonder if you’re making a difference in life?

Maybe somebody just hasn’t told you yet, but…

Every time we pin our invisible “Good Job!” membership badge to our shirt…

WE ARE.

We totally freakin’ ARE.

EXTRA Thoughts

I clap for people with my hands.
I clap for people with my heart.

Because I know what struggle feels like.

Last week…

I wrote:

“The ME today wouldn’t like to have a beer with the ‘me’ of yesterday.”

Curious?

Walking Without the Clapping

This week…

When you see someone trying…

Don’t just notice.

Let them know.

Live an inspired week.

Gratitude…
